I’m such a nerd for costume design sometimes. I just spent like an hour comparing all of the classic green pointy hat Link designs over the years and they’re all different and say things about the style of their respective games and the time period they were made in. They’re so cute too.
Like just look at the ocarina of time/majoras mask Link outfit
The botw/totk outfit is clearly based off of the official artwork for ocarina of time rather than adult link’s character model.
But this is a guy ready for combat in a relatively warm environment. His outer tunic is based off of a collared shirt while his inner shirt seems to be a peasant shirt. That hair comes straight out of the 90s. Those fingerless gloves are clearly meant to show he’s using a sword regularly but because they’re fingerless the designers were clearly prioritizing cool factor over practicality. He’s got a belt around his waist and a strap across his body to hold his sword, shield, and coin purse.

His green outfit is lightweight and uses shorts. His undershirt is a simple long sleeved shirt while his outer tunic is a peasant style tunic. It’s also a lighter shade of green. The inspiration for this outfit seems to be medieval fantasy or Robin Hood type media. Which makes sense because this guy is running around an overgrown post apocalypse.
His promotional outfit champions tunic on the other hand, is more inspired by knights uniforms. Fitting for a royal body guard. He’s got more protection on his right hand, which is the hand he uses for his sword, unusual in this series because in legend of Zelda the main character is usually left handed. He’s got a belt for his arrows and coin purse and a strap to hold all his weapons and shield. His cloves are fingerless which again could go either way but is still probably for the cool factor.
His hairstyle in three ponytails is more subtle than the ocarina of time hairstyle. I suspect this is partially because the current hardware can handle more polygons on the character model but also because people these days in the 21st century generally don’t have big hair and also generally don’t wear hats. So with that hairstyle they keep Link’s traditionally androgynous and foreign fantasy-ish look while also not making him look goofy to the audience. Because the hairstyle isn’t something you’d see most men wearing in our world but it’s also not distractingly loud.
Sorry I could go on and on about all of them but I’ll stop there. This is the sort of thing I think about when I’m not reading about mythology or playing video games. And still also while I’m playing video games as you can see.
